Planning China Healthcare Fieldwork Around Chinese New Year 2027: A Timing Guide for Global Buyers

Research methods
Healthcare

Every year, a predictable share of China healthcare studies run into the same wall: the brief lands in December or January, the field window is "four weeks," and nobody has checked where Chinese New Year falls.

In 2027, Chinese New Year's Day is Saturday, February 6. New Year's Eve is Friday, February 5, and the Lantern Festival, the traditional close of the season, is Saturday, February 20. The statutory holiday covers New Year's Eve and the first three days of the new year; the full official break, including any make-up working days, is set by China's State Council and is usually announced toward the end of the preceding year.

The holiday itself is only a few days. The effect on fieldwork is much longer. This guide is about planning for that.

Why the impact is wider than the official dates

For healthcare studies, the slowdown usually starts before the statutory days and ends after them:

Patient studies behave differently from HCP studies. Some patient segments are easier to reach while at home with family; others, especially those tied to hospital visits or treatment cycles, become harder. That difference is one more reason to brief HCP and patient components separately (see our piece on HCP vs patient feasibility clocks).

Three windows to plan around

Now to mid-January — What to expect: normal capacity, but year-end workloads and other buyers' Q4 projects compete for the same respondents. Good fit: studies that must close before the break; urgent quant with clear specialty criteria.

Mid-January to the Lantern Festival (Feb 20) — What to expect: the pre-holiday slowdown, the holiday, and the restart. Good fit: light quant top-ups only; avoid starting new qual or hard-to-reach specialty work.

Late February onward — What to expect: capacity recovers; demand from new-year budgets picks up. Good fit: new-year projects, qual with senior HCPs, larger multi-specialty studies.

These are planning patterns, not guarantees. Specialty, region, method, and incentive design all shift the picture, which is why we confirm timing per RFQ.

What to decide before you send the RFQ

  1. Hard deadline or soft deadline? If results must reach a client before the break, say so in the first line. It changes how we quote the field window.
  2. Split the study if you need to. A common pattern is to field the core quota before mid-January and leave a top-up for late February, rather than holding the whole study open across the holiday.
  3. Qual before quant, or after? If qual informs the quant screener, schedule qual early, because senior HCP interviews are the first thing the holiday squeezes.
  4. Who reviews on your side? Holiday slippage is often on the buyer side too: screener sign-off, client approvals, and translation checks. Name the reviewer and their availability.
  5. Incentive timing. Make sure incentive processing runs through traceable channels and doesn't stall over the break.

The brief we can turn around fastest

Send the usual feasibility fields (specialty or condition, hard eligibility, N by quota, method, LOI) plus two timing fields:

With that, Youli typically returns feasibility in one business day: achievable N by quota with a risk band, a recommended field window that accounts for the holiday, and the main timing risks.

Public snapshot (site-aligned): Youli covers 50+ countries and regions, 8M+ consumer samples, and 500K+ healthcare professionals and patients combined. Specialty-level and physician-only counts are scoped per RFQ.

If your Q1 plan includes China healthcare work, the earlier the brief arrives, the more of the calendar is still on your side.
